German commercial television is largely a dubbed journey back
to the golden age of '70s Americana - "The Streets of San
Francisco," "Starsky & Hutch," and Bruce Lee flicks - mixed in with
Russ Meyer's "Supervixens" breast-fests and "Tutti Frutti,"
Germany's own nude game show.
So when the RTL Plus channel announced it had bought the rights
to America's "Twin Peaks" - and only a year or so after the show had
aired in the United States - it was something of a sensation. RTL
Plus bought 20 episodes, dubbed them into German, pumped up the hype
and scheduled "Das Geheimnis von Twin Peaks" ("The Secret of Twin
Peaks") as the Friday prime-time lead-in to the "Tutti Frutti"
strip-o-rama.
