"$ FOR TIPS," proclaims the logo on thousands of magnets stuck on
business doors and filing cabinets.
"Those calling Metro Crime Stoppers might be eligible for a cash
reward up to $2,000," say the fliers offering money for anonymous
tips in unsolved crimes.
But the local Metro Crime Stoppers isn't exactly handing out
$2,000 left and right.
In all of 2002, the Baltimore-based nonprofit group paid $6,225 in
rewards in the jurisdictions it serves - Baltimore city and Anne
Arundel, Baltimore, Harford and Howard counties, according to its tax
returns, which are public record. Numbers for last year weren't
available.
Anne Arundel police said they haven't had a case where Crime
