Sweden Seeks Ban on Trade of Bluefin Tuna

The government of Sweden yesterday called for a ban on
international trade in the western Atlantic population of bluefin
tuna - a giant, predatory species that can grow up to 1,000 pounds
and live for 30 years but whose numbers have been reduced by 90
percent in the past two decades.
Conservationists had been urging the United States to make the
same proposal but last month federal fisheries officials recommended
delaying action on the species, which is heavily fished because it
can bring as much as $40 a pound in Japan. The U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service had been expected to decide this week whether to
call for a ban.
