Article: Wine, etc.: Sauvignon blanc, made well, can be a summer delight

Sauvignon blanc has certainly had its problems. Made in a style honest to the variety, the aromas can be offensive to all but a urologist. However, winemakers have gone out of their way to tame the pungent notes with oak or by blending it with semillon. The problem then becomes whether the wine is authentic sauvignon blanc or some non-descript laboratory project.

We recently have grown more fond of sauvignon blanc from South Africa and New Zealand. These wines are fresh, still pungent but packed with fruit and still true to the grape. In their most drinkable form, sauvignon blanc is refreshing with crisp acidity, tart flavors ranging from passion fruit to melon and often herbal.
