Conoco Quits Oil Project in Rain Forest; Firm Cites Economic Reasons, but Environmentalists Claim Victory

Conoco Inc., which had come under environmentalist fire for plans to develop oil in Ecuador's fragile tropical rain forest, announced yesterday that it is pulling out of the project for economic reasons.

Although environmental groups that had opposed the project contended that the decision by the Du Pont Co. subsidiary was a victory, Conoco's partners in the proposed development said they were moving forward.

"I think Conoco succumbed to public pressure and outrage, so we think this is a real victory," said Cathy Fogel of the Sierra Club. "We hope to keep this issue alive and keep fighting to protect this area."
