More than 2,000 District residents are now on waiting lists for
the city's publicly funded drug treatment programs, and three of the
city's six primary programs have stopped accepting names and
applications, according to city officials and treatment workers.
Some addicts who seek help are being told that they may have to
wait up to nine months. For example, at D.C. General Hospital's
detoxification program, 500 people are waiting for 20 beds.
Treatment workers said addicts are usually in a crisis when they
ask for help, and it is important to give them help quickly. By the
time their names come up on a long waiting list, it is sometimes too
late.
