There are lots of strawberry lovers who agree with the 17th
century English writer, Dr. William Butler who penned the lines,
"Doubtless God could have made a better berry, but doubtless God ever
did."
This love affair with the luscious red, heart-shaped savory berry
has continued through the centuries and today's generations await
their arrival in local markets each spring.
Tim Hopkins of Mt. Airy U-Pick Farm in Davidsonville owns one of
the last strawberry fields that at one time grew in abundance
throughout the county. During the early years of the last century,
fields in the northern part of the county supplied strawberries for
