State removes flags on overpass

The dozens of American flags that flew for almost a month along a Millersville Road highway overpass have been removed.

The flags were the work of Leo Bessenhoffer, a Korean War veteran who wanted drivers to see them as they passed below on Interstate 97. But the State Highway Administration said the flags presented a hazard for motorists and ordered them taken down.

Highway crews in bright yellow trucks removed the flags around noon yesterday as passing motorists honked their horns.

Mr. Bessenhoffer had planned to install 50 flags, but was only up to 35 when state officials told him they were a safety hazard and had to come down. He was given until Sunday to remove them. When he did not, ...
