Article: Around Annapolis: Fire company needs to equip new engine

Daniel Monch from the Eastport Volunteer Fire Company brought me a flier with an intriguing headline: "Paper can help put out fires." The type of paper? A check.

Over the past four years Eastport citizens and businesses have helped the fire company raise $350,000 for a new 1,000-gallon-a- minute, state-of-the-art fire engine. It replaces a 20-year-old engine that was beyond its service life and insurance rating requirements.

Many of the firefighting tools and appliances from the old engine are worn out or no longer serviceable. It will take more than $25,000 to fully equip the new engine. In addition, the fire company wants to continue upgrading the telemetry equipment on its medic unit.
