Piles of steel pipes collect in large quantity off in the grass; broken-down construction machines rust in the weather; a lone deer comes out of the trees into the industrial site, looking briefly toward the collection of barges floating in the water to the south.

Even with an aerial view, the Langenfelder Marine, Inc., portion of the more than 70 acres on the north side of Kent Island - which will be purchased by the state for $7.2 million, pending further study of the titles to a lake and pier - looks unfriendly, situated as a swath of white shells and rock among the green trees.
