The Kaiser Family Foundation's Employer Health Benefits 2006 Annual Survey shows a moderation in the rate of premium growth for 2006, the third consecutive year in which the growth rate has declined. However, growth in health insurance costs continues to outpace the rate of inflation and the growth in workers' wages.

Premiums

Between spring 2005 and spring 2006, premiums for employer- sponsored health insurance rose by 7.7 percent, compared to a 9.2 percent increase from 2004 to 2005. Despite this slowdown, premiums continued to increase much faster than overall inflation, 3.5 percent, and wage gains, 3.8 percent. Premiums for family coverage have increased by 87 percent since 2000.
