Pitcher Erik Bedard sat on a bench in front of his locker, typing
a text message on his phone, while three reporters waited. And so
began the laborious standoff that precedes what may be the most
uncomfortable three minutes in baseball.
The Baltimore Orioles left-hander snubs his coaches and teammates
in the same way. When Bedard returned from his stint with the
Canadian team in the World Baseball Classic, pitching coach Leo
Mazzone and Manager Sam Perlozzo both approached his locker, but the
surly southpaw glared at both and hardly said a word.
"The good thing about Leo is that if you can pitch, that's all
