LONG BEACH On a waiting list to buy a trendy Toyota Prius? Long Beach Transit has a much bigger hybrid.

LBT will put 15 gasoline hybrid buses on the streets Monday. Officials says it will be the largest such fleet in the world to be introduced into regular service.

Hybrid buses function much like the Prius. Electric motors work in concert with gasoline engines that handle higher speeds and heavier workloads.

They are easy to spot with "E-Power' emblazoned across the sides and battery packs on the roofs.

Hybrid buses got significantly better gas mileage in testing, about 5 mpg versus 3 mpg for existing diesel buses, said Long Beach Transit Assistant General Manager Guy Heston.
