LONG BEACH Minutes after the City Council approved a key Harbor
Commission appointment, the busy Tuesday meeting came to an abrupt
halt as firefighters investigated smoke coming from above the Council
Chambers.
The origin of the smoke was being determined, but firefighters
evacuated City Hall and the council adjourned the meeting at about
8:45 p.m. The meeting's end came as the council was beginning debate
over a proposed breakwater study.
That item was postponed for two weeks.
Council members, city staff and about 75 spectators were evacuated
after white smoke began pouring from the Council Chambers' roughly 30-
foot-high ceiling, possibly through an air duct or light shaft, said
