Simon Brown said yesterday that he plans to replace his trainer,
Emile Griffith, but blames only himself for fighting while he had
the flu and losing to Buddy McGirt. McGirt boxed superbly and won a
12-round decision Friday night in Las Vegas to take Brown's World
Boxing Council welterweight title with Brown weakened by both flu
and dieting to make the 147-pound weight limit.
Brown, back home in Mount Airy, Md., said he planned to move up
to the junior middleweight division with its 154-pound limit, and
hoped to be back in the ring by February. He said that he expected
Don King, who has promoted his last three fights, to arrange his
next bout.
