Article: The library, now with jitters

LONG BEACH - College students, especially those who commute, often require caffeine to fuel their studies.

Yet for years, the campus library - with its stringent "no food or drink" policy - was the one place where caffeine was hard to come by.

Roman Kochan, dean of University Library at Cal State Long Beach, began questioning the food-and-drink rule when he noticed young people wearing CSULB sweatshirts sipping coffee while studying at a large off-campus chain bookstore-coffee shop.

"A light bulb went off," he said. "Why not do this in the library so we can attract students who don't normally come here with the same type of ambience that you find in a bookstore and coffee shop?"
