During recent debate over AB1634, the failed bill that would have
required California pets to be spayed or neutered, the Humane Society
was criticized by breeders and others for supporting it.
Whether the criticism was justified is a matter of opinion.
It put me in an unusual situation. For years, I have worked with
Society officials on various issues. AB1634 was an exception. I
opposed it, disagreeing with the society and its president and CEO,
Wayne Pacelle, a friend for many years.
After the bill failed, Pacelle, the most outspoken president in
