Mary Docter had just won the women's 5,000-meter speed skating
trials to qualify for her fourth Olympic team. But the questions she
answered weren't about her performance. They were about her
struggles as a recovering drug addict.
The questions stemmed from comments Docter had made Saturday
night after making the Olympic 3,000-meter team. Docter said then
her first goal was to stay straight until the Olympics in February.
Docter said Sunday night that the last time she used drugs or
alcohol was March 17. The next day she checked into Hazelden, a drug
rehabilitation center in Center City, Minn.
"Once in Hazelden, I started learning about who I am, I guess,"
