Every other weekend for a year Catherine Fox and her husband,
John Didier, searched for a house in the Washington area that they
could call home. Finally, in January 1990, they found an airy
five-bedroom in Chevy Chase, D.C., and decided to buy.
They were pleased that their search was over and that they had
found what they thought was a unique house.
But Fox and Didier were in for a surprise.
Last September, Didier found under the front door a letter from
Mary Rowse, co-director of Historic Chevy Chase, D.C., a nonprofit
group that documents neighborhood history and design. Rowse wrote
that she had "tentatively identified" the house as a catalogue house
