SAN GABRIEL - Most residents know about the Mission church, the
San Gabriel Civic Auditorium and the Old Grapevine. But local history
enthusiasts say there may be a missing piece of the past lurking in
San Gabriel's Mission District.
Members of the city's historic association say there may have been
a small Chinatown across from the playhouse, with a Chinese
restaurant, laundry and living quarters in the early 1900s.
In a city and a region that is increasingly Chinese, this is a
finding not without interest.
"We are in the process of discovering," said Mary Cammarano, vice
president of the San Gabriel Historic Association and former mayor.
