SOUTH EL MONTE - Assistant City Manager Anthony Ybarra has been named interim city manager for South El Monte, officials said Wednesday.

The former city manager, Gary Chicots, was fired from his position Friday during a special meeting.

"This is a challenge,' Ybarra, 57, said. "I look forward to working with the council and staff to continue having the city of South El Monte progressing forward in redevelopment, housing and other issues.'

The City Council approved Ybarra's new post in a 4-0 vote Tuesday. Councilman Allen Co was absent from the closed-session meeting.
