Paul Azinger, who watched a great display of golf in open-mouth
admiration much of today, pounced on a little lapse on the final hole
to win the season-opening Tournament of Champions.
"At the end, I made it easy for Paul," said Ian Baker-Finch, who
made bogey from a fairway bunker on the 72nd hole and enabled Azinger
to win the opening event on the 1990 PGA Tour with a routine two-putt
par.
Baker-Finch's mistake-a slightly pulled drive that found the
sand-was his second of the day. But it was one too many.
The first, and possibly most telling, came when Azinger and the
Australian challenger were playing the fourth hole at the La Costa
Country Club course.
