DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Despite a tight state budget, two Dubuque
County legislators do not see tax hikes in the future.
Iowa Sen. Tom Flynn, D-Epworth, and Rep. Paul Scherrman, D-
Farley, told members of the Dubuque County Farm Bureau on Wednesday
that budget issues would occupy most of the state Legislature's
energies during the 2002 session, which begins Monday.
After Gov. Tom Vilsack ordered a 4.3 percent, across-the-board cut
in state spending last year, legislators restored some funds for
public safety and kindergarten through 12th-grade education in a
November special session.
Flynn and Scherrman predicted more belt-tightening.
