Article: Plan for Downtown Complex Has Department Store Space

A Canadian life insurance company is seeking approval to develop a large office complex at 555 12th St. NW that would include space for a fourth downtown Washington department store.

The proposal by the real estate development arm of Manufacturers Life Insurance Co. is the closest the District has come to realizing its long-frustrated goal of getting another department store in the downtown area.

The District government's executive branch has agreed to support the project, but the plan still faces two major hurdles.
