SPRINGFIELD (AP) - The battle for the Republican nomination for
governor grew more bitter Wednesday, with Patrick O'Malley suggesting
front-runner Jim Ryan ignored evidence of government corruption.
O'Malley said he will not back Ryan if he wins the nomination.
"I could not support Jim Ryan in any way, shape or form," he said.
A visibly angry Ryan, the state attorney general, fired back that
O'Malley and the third candidate, Lt. Gov. Corinne Wood, are lying to
voters and slinging campaign mud.
"The things that have been said about me and this office, it's
despicable," Ryan said. "We're in the toilet now. That's where we're
at."
