I was reading Sports Illustrated the other night, which I often do when I tire of comic books, when I came across an interesting story.

It was a checkback-type article on former marathoner Alberto Salazar. He's doing fine, but what really caught my attention was some information on the demise of the U.S. male marathoner.

According to the story, in 1984 201 American men made the Olympic trials in the marathon by running 26.2 miles in less than 2 hours, 19.04 minutes. In 2001, only 19 U.S. men broke 2:20.

This seemed odd because we have really become accustomed to athletes getting bigger, stronger and faster. The mile time keeps getting lower; high jumpers are going ridiculous heights. Even ...
