When a certain New York store, some years back, opened its first
outpost in Greater Washington, all us plain folks were expecting to
oooh and be awed by those big-shot New Yorkers coming down to bestow
instant glitz on us.
The gala invitational opening came, and the Chosen Few (those
with credit cards from the New York store and those presumed to be
eligible to be granted such an open sesame) arrived in our best New
York store-bought clothes. So what did the New York fancy folk
serve? Why fried chicken and, I do believe, corn bread. Presumably
because they thought that was as far as the local taste extended.
Now it is true that in Washington, home-fried chicken and corn
bread are eaten ...
