Two Main Street buildings officially have escaped calls for wrecking balls. They are now part of a nearly $2 million downtown renovation project.

Since The Fischer Cos. withdrew a city application to demolish 957 Main St. and 965 Main St. last summer, the company has incorporated both buildings into the Gateway for Upper Main Residential Rehab project.

The project will restore the facades of 965 Main St., the former location of Betty Jane Candies Inc.; 957 Main St., the former location of Vi's Nutrition; 951 Main St., the location of Sugar Ray's Barbecue; and the North Cooley and South Cooley buildings, located between 1042 and 1078 Main St.
