Alan Dostal stretches, jumps and puts his heart through its
cardiovascular paces, but what really sets his workout regimen apart
are the side kicks and counter punches.
Dostal looks to martial arts as an avenue to physical fitness.
"It appeals to a population looking for something more dynamic or
exciting in their workout," said Dostal, who has advanced to a second-
degree black belt after nine years of martial arts training.
"It is certainly more exciting than getting on a treadmill."
Dostal studies Kyuki-do under fifth-degree master black belt Ben
Springer, who operates a martial arts school at the corner of
Pennsylvania Avenue and the Northwest Arterial in Dubuque.
