The cold, muddy water of the swollen Amite River began receding
today from washed-out roads, bridges and flooded homes, and officials
said they expect heavy damage in its wake.
"It'll be a while before we have any good estimates. We still
can't get into a lot of the places, because they're still flooded,"
said Red Cross disaster director Bob Hernandez. "All I can tell you
is that a lot of people are comparing it to 1983, which was the worst
