"Emerald City," the satirical comedy by David Williamson that
opened Monday night at the Round House Theatre, is redeemed by its
setting, but only partially.
The story is certainly naggingly familiar-recounting, as it
does, the adventures of a respected screenwriter seduced by visions
of wealth, power and a villa with a waterfrontview. Colin, the
writer in question, is hardly the first to risk his artistic soul in
pursuit of the big time. And the hypocrisies of the cinema world
have been so often noted that they're unlikely to catch any of us off
guard when they crop up yet again.
What gives "Emerald City" a patina of novelty is that the power
games are unfolding in Sydney, Australia. ...
