PEOSTA, Iowa - Farmers use a lot of tools to do their jobs:
tractors, planters, combines and satellites.
Satellites?
For several years, global positioning system technology has been
available to agriculture.
The system relies on a network of satellites orbiting the earth to
map precise locations on the ground, including detailed maps of farm
fields. Farmers can use the maps for a variety of purposes.
The technology can save farmers money on inputs. But while using
satellites as "farming tools" is not new, farmers have not been quick
to embrace this space-age technology.
