The Rev. George Augustus Stallings Jr., Washington's dissident
black Catholic priest, said yesterday that he has formally left the
Roman Catholic Church to form a separate denomination, a move that
the church said would cause his automatic excommunication.
Stallings announced the creation of the African-American Catholic
Congregation while speaking in two forums. He was interviewed
Tuesday on "Donahue," the television talk show, which was broadcast
yesterday in New York and will air today in Washington. And he
reiterated his statement in a speech yesterday to Catholic students
at DePaul University in Chicago.
