Article: Candidates discover high cost of fund-raising; Presidential race: Edwards spends $438,000 to raise more money

WASHINGTON (AP) - Finding it takes money to make money, some Democratic presidential hopefuls are investing heavily in their fund- raising operations.

Sen. John Edwards identified about $438,000 - or one-fourth of his roughly $1.7 million in spending from January through March - as fund- raising expenses, a campaign finance report he filed with the Federal Election Commission shows. Fund-raising costs proved to be the biggest share of campaign spending by Edwards, who raised $7.4 million in the first quarter, the most in the nine-way Democratic race.
