MADISON, Wis. - Gene Boyer, a founder of the Wisconsin Women's
Network and the National Organization for Women, died Tuesday. She
was 78.
The Wisconsin Women's Network, a coalition of organizations that
work to improve women's status in Wisconsin, was formed in 1979. The
group still exists today.
Until the early 1970s, women would form coalitions around
individual legislation affecting women's rights, Lt. Gov. Barbara
Lawton said. Wisconsin women didn't start to more efficiently
organize their efforts until Boyer got involved, Lawton said.
She served as that organization's first treasurer, as a finance
vice president and as president of the NOW Legal Defense and
Education Fund.
