Article: Family found in rabid-bat case

DES MOINES (AP) - A family who dropped off a dead bat at a state lab was located Monday after the bat tested positive for rabies, state health officials said.

"The family apparently heard some broadcast news account over the noon hour," said Kevin Teale, spokesman for the Iowa Department of Public Health.

The family is from Riverside near Iowa City. Teale did not release the family's name.

Teale said the bat was dropped off at the University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory Thursday, but the lab had no information, such as a name or phone number, to contact the family.
