Plans to redevelop a shopping center on Route 198 in Burtonsville have thrust the future of a popular farmers market into uncertainty and prompted an outcry by residents who don't want it to be replaced by a big-box retailer.

The Dutch Country Farmers Market at Burtonsville Shopping Center, near Routes 198 and 29, draws thousands of patrons weekly to buy fresh produce, meats, homemade chocolates, preserves and baked goods.

The market, which has been open for nearly 20 years, is run by Amish and Mennonite managers and employees who travel hours from Pennsylvania and open shop three days a week, Thursdays through Saturdays.
