Article: Governor calls for tougher ethics bill; Lawyers say Blagojevich's attendance at fund-raiser is legal

SPRINGFIELD (AP) - Gov. Rod Blagojevich called for a tougher state ethics law Tuesday while defending his plans to attend a political fund-raiser organized by his personnel director.

Blagojevich renewed his call for lawmakers to pass ethics legislation that would add new inspectors to investigate corruption, create new restrictions on gifts from lobbyists and limit taxpayer- funded public service announcements that feature politicians.

The Democratic governor rejected the possibility of passing a law that would expire after five years, an idea being discussed at the Statehouse.
