Japan's conservative Liberal Democratic Party extended its
35-year grip on power with a resounding victory in Sunday's
parliamentary elections, according to complete returns.
The LDP, which has ruled Japan since its formation in 1955,
fought off what party leaders called their toughest challenge after a
year of scandal and political turbulence. While losing some seats in
the nationwide elections, the LDP easily retained a majority in the
512-seat lower house of the Japanese parliament, or Diet.
Prime Minister Toshiki Kaifu thanked voters and pledged to push
for political reform. But any reform now seems certain to be slow
and moderate, confounding those who last year predicted that ...
