Article: Expert says mad cow scare might affect CWD fight; Researcher is fearful that cattle testing will take away from battle with deer disease

WAUSAU (AP) - The first U.S. case of mad cow disease brings both positives and negatives to Wisconsin's efforts to deal with a similar fatal brain disease in wild deer, researchers said Thursday.

"Very clearly, there needs to be a lot more testing on cattle in the U.S. Will this divert some of the efforts toward deer disease? I guess that is possible," University of Wisconsin-Madison Professor Judd Aiken said.

For nearly two decades, Aiken has researched the prion afflictions commonly called mad cow and chronic wasting diseases.
