East Germany's surging Social Democrats, who are expected to win
the country's first free elections March 18, voted unanimously today
to elect as their honorary chairman Willy Brandt, the former West
German chancellor and Nobel Peace Prize winner.
The choice of Brandt, who holds a similar position in the West
German Social Democratic party, was seen as a symbolic gesture of
unity that underscored the Social Democrats' hopes of becoming the
majority party in a unified German nation.
The 500 delegates attending their party's first convention here
this weekend vowed to work toward early unification with West Germany
if they take control of government after the vote three weeks from
now.
