DES MOINES (AP) - Summer in Marshalltown brings long, languid
days, the roar of stock cars on the city's dirt speedway and, for the
final time, the state baseball tournament.
The tournament host since 1975, Marshalltown will start its last
fling in that capacity on Wednesday. Ditto for Carroll, which has
hosted state tournament games at its quaint, blue ballpark since
1995.
The big city won out in bidding for the tournament and next year,
all four classes will be played at Sec Taylor Stadium in Des Moines.
This week, Class 2A and 4A games will be played at Marshalltown,
while the 3A and 1A schools gather at Carroll. And at both places,
the focus is not on where the tournament is moving next ...
