NEW YORK - The spirit of garage rock infused both the three-chord
anthems of the Ramones and the raw power of Iggy and the Stooges.
But aside from a few blips on the cultural radar, the simplistic
formula and nothing-fancy attitude that defines garage rock has
drifted to the fringes of musical history. Played in dingy garages
and barrooms, it was mostly ignored by the mainstream.
That three-chord energy shook the musical world's hips as 40 bands
from legendary rocker Bo Diddley to revivalists the Strokes gathered
in New York recently to kick out the jams at the International
Underground Garage Festival.
