After 21 years, the Victory Bell finally tolled for St. Ambrose
Saturday.
Dark since 1983, the St. Ambrose-Loras rivalry returned Saturday
with a classic defensive-oriented matchup reminiscent of some of the
series' best games. A relentless Fighting Bees defense sacked Duhawks
quarterback Matt Hintz seven times and forced three turnovers,
allowing St. Ambrose to claim a heated 16-14 drama before an
estimated Rock Bowl crowd of 5,088.
Salt seeping into a deep cut in his pride, Loras coach Bob Bierie
was a portrait of pain after the game. In his mind he replayed the
mistakes that cost his team a victory over the No. 6-ranked team in
NAIA Division II.
