Article: Afloat in ice cream; July brings back memories of drive-ins and root beer floats

Remember the old-fashioned drive-ins? Not the movie ones, but the fast food ones.

We used to have several in Dubuque, at least two were A&Ws.

Back in my dating days it was almost unheard of to have a date and not at least take a spin through an A&W just to see who was there. The most popular one was on the lower end of Dodge Street, next to the former Demitri's Restaurant - both of which bit the dust with the U.S. 20 highway project.

If you spotted some friends at the drive-in, of course, you'd have to stop and at least order a root beer so you wouldn't get kicked out while you visited. The beverage of choice was almost always a root beer - or even better, my husband's favorite - a root beer ...
