Long before Dubuque County's own fair began 51 years ago, the city
was home briefly to the Iowa State Fair, now in its 150th year.
Tuesday's opening ceremonies at the Dubuque County Fair recalled
the time Dubuque hosted the ninth and 10th state fairs, in 1862 and
1863.
In observance of its sesquicentennial year, the Iowa State Fair is
recognizing the eight cities that are former state fair hosts. On
Tuesday, sesquicentennial co-chairman Paul Vaassen presented the
Dubuque community with a plaque commemorating the city's and county's
role in state fair history.
