Being a Jew in Dubuque on the high holidays of Rosh Hashana and
Yom Kippur might be like being a Christian on Mars at Christmas.
Rosh Hashana, the beginning of the Jewish New Year, begins this
year at sundown Wednesday. It is the beginning of 10 days of soul
searching and repentance. Yom Kippur, which begins at sundown on
Sept. 24, is the Day of Atonement. The day of fasting and prayer is
followed by a feast.
Ann Barrash, a member of Dubuque's Temple Beth El, grew up in a
west side Chicago neighborhood where there was a synagogue on every
other street corner and 99 percent of her public school classmates
were Jewish
