Bruno Bettelheim, 86, a concentration camp survivor who became
one of the great figures in American psychology, known for the
originality, warmth and wisdom he brought to the study of the minds
and emotions of children, was found dead yesterday at a retirement
home in Silver Spring.
Montgomery County police said Bettelheim's death at the Charter
House was ruled a suicide, and apparently resulted from asphyxiation.
They said a note was found. Friends said Bettelheim recently had
suffered a stroke.
A man whose pungent opinions on child-rearing were likened to the
preachments of a biblical prophet, Bettelheim was the author of
