Article: Pioneering Psychologist Bruno Bettelheim Dies; Scholar Known for Imaginative Techniques in the Study of Children

Bruno Bettelheim, 86, a concentration camp survivor who became one of the great figures in American psychology, known for the originality, warmth and wisdom he brought to the study of the minds and emotions of children, was found dead yesterday at a retirement home in Silver Spring.

Montgomery County police said Bettelheim's death at the Charter House was ruled a suicide, and apparently resulted from asphyxiation. They said a note was found. Friends said Bettelheim recently had suffered a stroke.
