I am not surprised that debate about anonymous sources flared with the recent identification of the Watergate-era source "Deep Throat."

Then again, I am surprised that some people are surprised.

The world now knows that W. Mark Felt, then the No. 2 man in the Federal Bureau of Investigation, was the No. 1 anonymous source for The Washington Post's Watergate reports. Eventually, Watergate took down Richard Nixon's presidency.

For three decades, journalist Bob Woodward said his "deep background" source held a high post in government. No surprise. After all, no one could come into that much information without being in a position to know.
