FIFTY DOZEN Olympia oysters were served in the kitchen of Jean
Louis at Watergate recently, but they were only the supporting cast.
Wine was meant to be the star, for the occasion was the great
American Oyster Wine tasting, being conducted in seven cities, to
find the best American wine to go with oysters.
A group of tasters gathered two afternoons for the prelims and
finale, tasting the wines blind and the oysters plain. At
preliminary tastings each judge suggested wines, so in that first
round each city had a different group of wines to be tasted-well over
100 in all. The wine list was narrowed to 21 finalists for the final
